Deconstructing Fort Chaffee’s Cuban Refugee History
In 1980, more than 125,000 Cubans fleeing Fidel Castro's communist regime were boatlifted to America and processed at military compounds including Fort Chaffee in Arkansas. Among the population were gay Cubans and prisoners that Castro had purged from his prisons. The Cubans were widely portrayed by the press as criminal—a stigma that's persisted. But as Jacqueline Froelich reports, historians are working to clarify the record.

Private Option Dominates First Week of Session

But before those bugs mature, they spend their young lives as nymphs in local waterways. We visit a local creek to see what is swimming and crawling beneath the surface. The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration releases revenue projections for the 2014 fiscal year ahead of next year's Fiscal Session of the Arkansas General Assembly. Governor Mike Beebe is sued by one of the leaders of the state Republican Party over an alleged violation of the state's Freedom of Information Act. Fort Smith transit officials propose a fare increase to help offset rising overhead costs. And Van Buren officials get a peek at a proposed budget for next year.
