The latest results released from the Talk Business Arkansas-Hendrix College poll show that the chief concern among Arkansas voters is the economy as this mid-term election year gets underway. Crews with the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad continue to make repairs and determine the cause of failure to certain equipment on the railroad bridge crossing the Arkansas River at Van Buren. Cargill is ordered to pay more than $2 million in a settlement of hiring discrimination allegations, and the state of Arkansas is clawing back nearly a half million dollars from Hewlett-Packard after the company failed to meet employment projections at its facility in Conway.

The commercial killing of horses for food ended in the U.S. six years ago, but was revived in 2011. Three horse slaughterhouses were set to open in the U.S., including one in Missouri. But on Jan. 16th Congress declined funding USDA inspections for horse meatpacking plants, basically shutting down the industry. Temple GrandinDr. Temple Grandin—world-famous animal welfare scientist and autism "self-advocate"—talks to Ozarks At Large's Jacqueline Froelich about her life, research and being the subject of a much-acclaimed HBO biopic. She made an appearance in Fayetteville July 27th to deliver a public talk at the Pauline Whitaker Equine Center. Her visit was sponsored by Tyson Foods Office of Animal Well-Being, the University of Arkansas and the Northwest Arkansas Autism Support Group.

Books can be a terrifying thing for the average college student. Not only because they'll have to memorize the immense amount of information inside the covers, but because they often come with a hefty price tag. Helping to make acquiring a book less expensive is a new rental program. Antoinette Grajeda reports.
Peter Lippincott's poetry is respected around the state and far beyond. This year the Arkansas Arts Council named him an Arkansas Living Treasure. We visited his studio in Fort Smith to ask him about the honor.
