Deconstructing Fort Chaffee’s Cuban Refugee History
In 1980, more than 125,000 Cubans fleeing Fidel Castro's communist regime were boatlifted to America and processed at military compounds including Fort Chaffee in Arkansas. Among the population were gay Cubans and prisoners that Castro had purged from his prisons. The Cubans were widely portrayed by the press as criminal—a stigma that's persisted. But as Jacqueline Froelich reports, historians are working to clarify the record.

Ahead on this edition of Ozarks, Spring is officially here, and warmer weather will soon bring with it insects like mayflies and damsel flies out and about. But before those bugs mature, they spend their young lives as nymphs in local waterways. We visit a local creek to see what is swimming and crawling beneath the surface. Initiative Aims To End Corporate Campaign Dollars, Lake to Be Drained

The latest revenue numbers for Arkansas have been reported. A new effort by a veteran ballot initiative group pushes forward a new proposal to limit corporations' ability to contribute to political campaigns. And, Lake Keith in Cave Springs will soon be drained so work can be done on the watershed sanctuary being developed.

Undocumented Youth Pursuing American Futures

Last summer, the Obama administration announced that undocumented youth who meet certain criteria, could apply for “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals”—entitling them to temporary employment authorization cards, government issued IDs, and driver’s licenses. Several thousand young people in Arkansas have been granted this special status, including Cindi Perez (pictured) who lives with her family in Fort Smith.
Arkansas Ranks Highest in Senior Hunger

The National Foundation to End Senior Hunger recently released a report that suggests that more than 24 percent of Arkansans aged 60 or older are in danger of going hungry.
