Deconstructing Fort Chaffee’s Cuban Refugee History
In 1980, more than 125,000 Cubans fleeing Fidel Castro's communist regime were boatlifted to America and processed at military compounds including Fort Chaffee in Arkansas. Among the population were gay Cubans and prisoners that Castro had purged from his prisons. The Cubans were widely portrayed by the press as criminal—a stigma that's persisted. But as Jacqueline Froelich reports, historians are working to clarify the record.

Ahead on this edition of Ozarks, Spring is officially here, and warmer weather will soon bring with it insects like mayflies and damsel flies out and about. But before those bugs mature, they spend their young lives as nymphs in local waterways. We visit a local creek to see what is swimming and crawling beneath the surface. Finding Forever Homes For Fostered Youths

At any given time, there are around 4000 children in foster care in Arkansas. Of those, 500 will never return home. Sebastian County has the second-largest number of foster kids and children available for adoption behind only Pulaski County though its population is much less. A Harrison Middle School EAST class, under the direction of teacher John Henderson, is researching Fick Cemetery, purported to be the town’s first burial ground—some believe for African Americans. And while all artifacts and stones have long been removed, the students are determined to unearth the truth.
