Ozarks At Large
A bill to establish an independent commission to approve public enrollment charter schools in Arkansas has stalled. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe has asked the state education department to strike an alternative. We also look at what’s trending nationally.A bill that would initiate a study of the state's public schools' readiness to acts of violence is one step closer to becoming law. The Applied Sustainability Center at the University of Arkansas selects cities to be a part of a program studying municipal sustainable energy consumption. And Lincoln residents will get the chance to see one of the Academy Awards nominees, weeks before the ceremony takes place in Holywood.
On today's edition of Ozarks, 21c Museum Hotel officially opens. We have a report from the ribbon cutting ceremony that took place late this morning. Plus, local organizations are helping education residents about the Earned Income Tax Credit, while tomorrow night's Science Cafe will provide information on the nanotechnology work being conducted on the University of Arkansas campus.A proposed bill by a local state lawmaker would allow certain people to carry concealed firearms on the state’s college campuses. That bill heads to the House Committee on Education in the Arkansas legislature. But, as Timothy Dennis reports, proponents and opponents of the issue have plenty to say about the bill.
A recent bill in the Arkansas legislature would reward state employees who report waste or inefficiency with state money, and lawmakers speak out on a recently released audit of the state's Medicaid system. And, smaller beef cattle herds in the state caused by last year's drought may result in higher beef prices at the grocery store.

Today is Chinese New Year, beginning the Year of the Snake. In honor of the holiday, Ozarks at Large's Christina Thomas visits the Reptile Museum in Fayetteville to take a look at some snakes, alligators and other scaly beasts.

Congressman Tom Cotton and Mark Pryor traded verbal blows late last week as each addressed the Delta Grassroots Caucus, which held its annual meeting in Little Rock. Enrollment in the state's Private Option continued to grow last month, as evidenced by a new report released by the Arkansas Department of Human Services, and the University of Arkansas System moved forward with its future online university programs last week by hiring the school's first three employees.

Students begin to lose gains made throughout the academic year almost as soon as the final bell rings for summer vacation. An open forum tomorrow at the Jones Center in Springdale will address opportunities to keep students' minds active during out of school times. Many organizations will be involved, including the Arkansas Out of School Network.
Roby Brock, from Talk Business and Politics, says it was an especially busy week for economic matters in Arkansas, including Tyson Foods' attempt to acquire Hillshire Brands.
Children's House in Springdale is designed to help some of the youngest victims of abuse and neglect in northwest Arkansas.
